It all started when I saw this old fashioned cigarette machine that sold
art at the Frost art museum here in Miami. I was excited! So I researched
the company and got an idea...
The modern house in a box idea came from a story I was told about how the
game Monopoly was created. You see, it was the depression and people were
broke. The creator made it to teach his kids how business worked and to
give them a sense of how it feels to have money. Today the idea of hiring
an architect and building your own house that is like no other is a
novelty that few can enjoy. I loved that Art-o-mat pieces are limited to 5
dollars. I make 2.50 of each one of 50 I made for the machines and I have
sold another 30 privately for 20 each. The materials cost on average about
3 dollars or so, and the labor if it was for architecture would be about
400 dollars a model, where as a sweat shop would be about 9 cents or so.
They take about 20 min. to make the contents of each one (house,
landscape, trees, roads, sidewalks, etc.) The boxes themselves were
another story cause I was cutting the 1/8” plexi with a band saw, sanding
them by hand and welding the walls together. Now I have access to a laser
cutter and all I need to do is weld (saves about 20 hours of labor per
100!!!) I want people to have the joy, even if it is only make belief, of
having a conceptually designed house that they can call their own!

Hi, Christian. Janet Tanguay gave me
house #46 to register with you and I was not sure what this was
about. We met at a networking event and she was very kind to send
this cool piece of art to me. So I followed the directions on the
back. You have a very interesting mind, by the way. I am a
photographer in the capital region. If you get a chance, check me
out at:

Thanks, Joan
